The school's sports teams are called the Mountaineers and compete in the Big East Conference, a member of the NCAA's Division I. The school has teams in 13 college sports and has won several national championships (including multiple NCAA Rifle team championships, track, and wrestling.) Mountaineer sports were started in 1891 when a group of students organized the first football game at the school.
