Florida State University football is one of
the premier collegiate football teams in America. From it's humble
beginnings in 1947, FSU has worked its way up to a national championship
contender and leader of the Atlantic Coast Conference and is well-known
for introducing great talent into the NFL, including Deion Sanders,
Derrick Brooks, Warrick Dunn, and Peter Boulware in recent history.
Since joining the ACC, the Seminoles have won at least a share of twelve
conference championships in 14 years, including national championships
in 1993 and 1999.
The Seminole are a Native American Indian people of Florida. The
Seminole nation came into existence in the early- and mid-18th century,
and was composed mostly of refugees from Georgia, Mississippi, and
Alabama. These refugees included members of Indian tribes -- such as the
Creek Nation --as well as escaped slaves. After a series of wars with
the U.S., the Seminole were conquered in 1858. Subsequently, most of the
Seminole were forcibly removed to present-day Oklahoma.
After the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, the indigenous people of
Florida were decimated by disease, and it is believed that the few
survivors were evacuated by the Spanish to Cuba when Florida fell under
British rule in 1763.
