The Superdome origins date back to 1967.
Then, governor of Louisiana, John J. McKeithen, attended a baseball game
at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. He was very impressed with the
large, domed stadium. During the game he was quoted as saying, "I want
one of these, only bigger," in reference to the Astrodome. He would get
his wish five years later. More Super Bowls have been played at the
Louisiana Superdome than at any other sports facility: 1978, 1981, 1986,
1990, 1997, and 2002. The Superdome also hosts the Sugar Bowl, the New
Orleans Bowl, Tulane University college football home games, and the
Bayou Classic football game between Grambling State and Southern
University. The facility has also hosted several NCAA college basketball
Final Fours: 1982, 1987, 1993, and 2004.
In 2005, the stadium was badly damaged from
Hurricane Katrina's winds and flooding, and many were skeptical as to
whether or not the Dome would even re-open, as authorities said it
contained a "probable biohazard" resulting from the trash and human
waste left in the building when it was used as a refuge for those who
were unable to flee the city. The Superdome had been closed indefinitely
and was not used during the 2005 football season. However, on Super Bowl
XL Sunday (February 5, 2006), the NFL announced that the Saints would
play their home opener on September 24, 2006 in the Superdome against
the Atlanta Falcons. The game has since been moved to Monday night,
September 25, 2006.
